Preparing for the VSO Assessment Day

August 19th, 2008

I have been preparing for tomorrow’s VSO Assessment Day. I have to admit, I’m slightly nervous! From what I have read online and the information pack details, I’m probably getting worked-up over nothing…

The Assessment Day includes an individual interview and three group activities. Normally groups of six candidates from a range of skill areas are invited to each Assessment Day and three Selectors carry out the assessment.

Preparations so far have included filling in the CRB Disclosure Application Form and trying to fully understand all the instructions that go with it. I hate filling in these official forms! It’s hard enough trying to make sure you get the BLOCK CAPITALS exactly within the small little boxes they provide!

What personal qualities are VSO looking for on the Assessment Day?

  • Positive and Realistic Commitment
  • Working With Others
  • Commitment to Learning
  • Practical Problem Solving Ability
  • Flexibility and Adaptability
  • Self Assurance
  • Sensitivity to the Needs of Others

Please think about situations when you have had to draw upon the aforementioned personal qualities either in your personal or professional life. We will ask you to give specific examples of these on the Assessment Day. It is important to remember that we are not looking for extraordinary people, but people who are going to enjoy the experience and work effectively overseas.

I’m going to spend the rest of the evening thinking about the above qualities and personal examples; ready for tomorrow! They also recommend you learn the VSO’s Vision, Purpose and Values! I won’t quote that too, for those interested, please visit the VSO’s website.

I’ll write an update tomorrow on the whole VSO Assessment Day experience.
